February is the month of love. Expect to be overrun with the color red, everything heart-shaped, and love songs in the air. And that’s all okay with me because I’m a sucker for chocolate, flowers, hearts, music, the color red, and especially love! Bring it on!
The spirit behind all this love is Biblical. A great part of how Valentine’s Day is played out in our culture most certainly is not biblical because there is so much misunderstanding about what love truly is, but I’m not going to waste precious space here talking about what is not. Let’s talk about what is.
God is Love. God is spirit. God is the Spirit of Love. Anything that is spoken, given, acted upon, and lived in love is of God. Love comes from God and all that is done in love is done by imitating the love God has for us. We cannot truly love fully and unconditionally without knowing God and experiencing his love in our own life. We can’t even receive love properly if we do not know God’s love personally.
If you’ve been hurt or disappointed by “love” in the past, meditate on this idea for a while and ask God to clarify what His love is really like. Then think about your past experiences of giving and receiving what you have considered love to be, and how your relationships were and are affected by the truth he shows you. How does that “love” measure up against God’s love for you? He wants you to live the abundant life that is cloaked and filled and overflowing with unconditional love.
I John 3:1 “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
If you are a child of God, he wants you to know without a shadow of a doubt every second of every day that He loves you! Not only does he love you, but his love- and therefore all true love – is unconditional. A person’s character or behavior, their disbelief or rejection, does not change or void his love. His character never changes. His love never dies. You are his beloved and His heart is for you. The Bible has made this fact abundantly clear by stating it in several different ways throughout scripture. I’m sharing this list from I Love Bible Quotes which tells us some of the ways God shows you what he thinks about you, and how much God’s heart is for you.
